I don't think the NZ economy has been hit as hard as some of the other countries, but there is reportedly higher unemployment at the moment than there has been for many years. It would depend on what kind of work you're looking for as to where the best place to go is. For general office work/temping you should stick to the cities but for seasonal work there are options for fruit picking in various locations, and work in the ski resorts in winter. As you are heading out in September the ski season will be drawing to a close though. Try this site to give you an idea of what kind of casual work is about for backpackers. Also have a look at Seek as that's the main job website here. |

Bex is right, NZ has been lucky so far....theres always gonna be seasonal work for backpackers, fruit picking, vineyard work etc, so if you're prepared to do a bit of that you should be fine. Your skills will depend on where you'd best find work if you're looking for something specific, however if you're just looking for a job to give you the cash to fund your adventure then stick to the backpackers hot spots where there will always be something going |

spend at least 3-4 months is wellington! you can find a job pretty quick in a hostel or a restaurant or bar. and the nightlife there is amazing! |
