My husband needed to get a visa-on-arrival in Thailand and both times (at the Bangkok airport and at the overland crossing in NongKai) they asked for proof of onward travel. What we've done for these situations is book fully refundable flights and cancel it online after we enter (or after we apply for a visa), or sometimes after we print out the itinerary. Just make sure you read all the fine prints to make sure there are no penalties for cancellation, etc.

Just jumping on the same "proof" theme, has anyone been questioned about their ability to support themselves throughout their stay? If so, what do they expect to see as proof? Do they want you to have some cash on you or do they expect you to carry a bank statement around with you?

Yeah good point. I was wondering the same. How do I prove I have cash???

i never had to provide a bank statement or anything like that...not that i had one with me! the only place that seemed interested in money was when i flew in to LA and the guy gave me a grilling about how much i had and how i was going to support myself in the US after being away so long. i basically just told him i'd saved up and if it ran out i'd be heading home haha. he did question me for quite a while but he seemed satisfied enough to let me in!

i think for some particular visas to various countries you need to provide bank statements to be granted one, but that depends on where you're from/going etc
