Well, it's twelve years since I've been there, but I figure if my memories are still going strong then it's worth seeing Sugar Loaf, Corcovado, the botanical gardens, Ipanema, the Sanata Teresa tram, and the ferry over to Paqueta.

We bought some lovely chunks of gemstones as bookends (although I don't know if baggage allowances these days would be sufficient) and the best places to eat were the 'kilo' places - the delis with hot and cold buffets where you paid according to how much was on your plate, and were great value.

I agree with Hickatee. All things mentioned are can't miss in RIO. I would like add the district of Leme. They had an awesome street party! Food vendors, live music, and makeshift night clubs. I went during Carnival season, it may differ but something look into. Take in a Soccer or Futbol game...they are pretty fun!
Not sure what is your comfort level, but if your :westernized" Ipanema, is your best bet. A lot of tourist chill in that area, so you wont feel totally lost. Not mention Ipanema, is a better beach; Copacabana is over hyped. The Euro or Dollar is very strong...so everything is relatively cheap. Street vendor supply great little treats. I had the best Argentina steak that would cost me over 50 USD back home!

Its a beautiful city, you are going to have a blast!
