Some questions about trip to North of Vietnam

Travel Forums Asia Some questions about trip to North of Vietnam

Hi there,

I would like to ask that somebody has ever been to North of Vietnam during CNY? because I will come probably next year ( 2/12 ~ 2/19 2010) to North of VN, but I am worried about some shops or travel agencies will close at that time, my most concern is that the ships will run by travel agencies if I book Ha Long Bay tour? and is it suitable time to come North of VN during CNY?

Any replies or comments would be welcome / appreciated.

Have a good day~~

I was in HaNoi during Tet 06. Almost everything shuts down for first 1-2 days of Tet. Of course the hotels/GHs are open for business plus a few restaurants are open, but none of the museums or sights. Then, day by day everything got back to normal. I went to HaLong Bay during the last few days of Tet. You will be able to see/do everything you want if you stay the entire week of Tet.

DO NOT book any tour until you get to VN. There is so much competition between tour companies, you will get the best price once you are there. Get at least 3 quotes before committing to a tour. Many of my older VN photos are of HaNoi during Tet. Send me a PM if you have specific questions on VN.

Hello Mike,

It is very helpful information, thank you so much, and I will then check it out with Sinf cafe or other tour companies to confirm once more if 2/12 ~ 2/19 2012 the Ha Long Bay tour is still opened to book so that my VN trip can go smoothly.

I will ask you if I have more questions about VN.

Thank you once again.

I was in Hanoi for TET in Feb 2008 and everything was closed for up to 4 days. Just a few tourist resturants open in the evenings. Travel agencies were all closed, all shops were closed all sights were closed!.

We booked to Halong bay from our hotel. The boat was also cold, and only had one blanket, it would have been lovely proabably a month later. I think cold weather in China was blowing across to VN.

It was a freezing cold time to go, I have never been so cold in all my life, had to buy hat and gloves etc.

It got warmer as we travelled down the country.

Hello Jenny,

Thank you for your info.

Yes, this is actually what I am going to concern about will the tour companies and shops /restaurants be operating at TET period, and may I know that how did you go your itineraries at that time? so that may be I can have a preparation for changing something for my itineraries.

Would be much appreciated for your reply.

Most of the hotels in Hanoi are still open on Tet holidays. Everything is much better if you can arrange tours or accommodation before coming. You will have not to worry about anything.
Many restaurants are opened from 3rd of Tet so you can join a Halong bay tour 3 days 2 nights. Tet is over when you finish Halong tour. I did have a nice Tet with arrangement.
Good luck for your plan.

Hi Susan
We did not realise that everything would be closed until we got there.
We could not change currency at the airport.
Most hotels seemed to be open, but we were in a Bed and Breakfast.
During the days we just walked around the area, lakes etc. I think we booked our Halong Bay trip on the 3rd day.
We managed to squeeze in a few sights e.g Temple of Literature, before we left, but it did mean that we could not see everything as planned.
It was also very cold, which we had not planned for.
