I have taken a train from Bangkok all the way to Singapore. With stops in Hat Yai, Penang/Butterworth, KL and then arrival in Singapore. Those train rides were cheap but it was a long cold ride! You might be able to use some of the discount airlines to get to some of your stops. Some cheap airlines have lower weight allowances so keep that in mind. Except for getting to Hong Kong and Oz bus travel is pretty good too - but time consuming!

I liked Penang mainly because it was so much cheaper than Singapore! There are some tourists attractions in Malaysia, just Google up "what to see and do in Malaysia" for some ideas.

(Khao San Road buses sometimes have theft complaints use a regular bus station.)

Good luck.

totally agree on the train great fun cheap aas chips esp the 2nd class sleeper

break up the journey at butterworth station for penang unmissable imo and v cheap

KL is great fun and vibrant

found singapore v expensive by asian standards and quite sterile worth an overnighter at best.

coaches in malaysia vg value too luxurious standards and a bowl of rice price.

enjoy..

I agree with karazyal... Try to take train into Malaysia because you can enjoy the friendlyness of the locals and also the view plus cheap fares... From Kuala Lumpur, you can take express bus to Malacca, the historical town and then down to Singapore. There are cheap flights from AirAsia as well. Can either fly from Bangkok straight to KL, Penang or Johor Bahru. Maybe you can try the southern islands and fly from Krabi to Kuala Lumpur.

Enjoy your trip
