kiwisammy has indicated that this thread is about Vietnam

Hi,

I'm looking for a tour to do this August for 2 days in the Mekong Delta (starting and finishing in HCMC) or 3 days in the Mekong Delta (starting in HCMC and finishing in Phnom Penh).
I want to go to My Tho and Can Tho for the Cai Rang Market and would like to stay in a home stay.

From looking at different tour websites, tours seem to only go to Cai Be market but I really want to go to Cai Rang market as Ive heard its better.

Has anyone done this and have any recommendations.

Thanks Heaps.

Hi Kiwisammy,

I am in Can Tho at the moment. Ive spent a lot of time here. If you want to visit Cai Rang market (which is the best ive heard, although it is the only floating market I have visited so I have nothing to compare with) it is very easy to organise without a tour. You just travel to Can Tho and go to the riverside and lots of people will approach you asking if you want to go on a boat trip. You can arrange a trip to the markets for the next morning (be prepared to get up early). When I did this last year with my friend, we went to the Cai Rang markets and afterward made our way back to Can Tho city via some small canals which was quite nice. It is also possible to take a bus to Cai Rang and from there rent a boat to go see the markets. This is possibly a cheaper option.

I think a 2 day tour finishing and starting in HCMC is very short! If I were you I would travel straight from HCMC by bus to Can Tho (4-5 hours) and stay there one or two days. Then move onto Chau Doc (3 hours by bus) and spend a night there and visit Sam mountain. From Chau Doc you can take a boat to Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

Tours through the Mekong Delta are quite cheap but I prefer doing things independently. The cost of doing this independently won't be much more than if you go on a tour.

Let me know if you require more info about Can Tho, such as hotels etc. I will try help you out where I can.

Cheers from one kiwi to another

Have you also been to My Tho?

Hi again,

Sorry I have not been to My Tho, other than passing through on the bus from HCMC. I am not sure what the attraction(s) are in My Tho. The Mekong delta is a very nice area to visit, but I don't think it is necessary to visit too many different places. Can Tho, being the biggest city in the region, has a fair number of sights and attraction to keep one occupied for 2 or 3 days. If in the future you want some suggestions of what to do let me know. I guess what you should do and where you should go largely depends on what it is you want to get from your trip. For example one of my favorite things to do is just to go for a stroll through the market. Always interesting with lots happening. Furthermore it's free too, and great photo opportunities.

Cheers

Hi,
If you are fancy with tropical fruit, Cai Be market is your great destination. However, i think Cai Rang market is very good place for short visit. It is not very far from Can THo city. You can easy to find hotel with cheap price with acceptable quality there and transporting connection is better in Can Tho than other cities.
Wish you nice trip.
G.
