Hi everyone, my partner and myself are planning our holiday in October this year. We have previously been to the Maldives, which was fantastic, but unfortunately our budget doesn't allow a trip there this year. However, we loved the feeling of being on a warm, sunny, island "in the middle of no-where" without too many people, so we are wondering if anyone can recommend a destination that can give us this, but preferably at a slightly less expensive price.. Any suggestions greatly appreciated! :)

Where are you flying from? That makes the biggest difference I guess :)

Islands like Redang in Malaysia are cheaper in general than the Maldives.

Where do you live and where are you travelling from?? The answer to that, will open the door to a squillion ideas.

We live in Norway, flying from Oslo. Alternatively we can fly from the UK. :)

The Canary Islands aren't too bad, provided you rent a car and stay in one of the family pensions away from the coast and mass tourist resort places.

If you want a place that is less overrun with tourists, try the Turkish part of Cyprus.

Not the Maledives, but all nice islands with great beaches.

The Philippines. Best beaches in the world and litterally thousands to choose from, most of them deserted. Also it's very cheap. It's a bit of a challenge compared to somewhere like the Maldives but worth it.

Thailand has some pretty good islands that are relatively cheap as well, plus Thai airways just started flying direct from Oslo to Bangkok a few weeks ago. Otherwise, take SAS to Stockholm/Copenhagen and board Air Malaysia. I stayed at a place on Redang island about 6 weeks ago that was most excellent.

If looking closer by home, I reckon the Canaries are a pretty good bet.

Thanks for your replies. We've been to Gran Canaria, but will definitely check out the phillipines and malaysia!

Any specific suggestions for Redang?

I found this site quite useful when doing research as there isn't much info on the island. We managed to get a good deal for Berjaya Beach, which included a flight from Kuala Lumpur. That's a time saver if time is limited and ended up not costing us much more than if we'd done flight/taxi/boat which most do. We also had a chance to visit the other side of the island. I thought Coral Redang had a nice vibe and didn't seem overly expensive. Plus it had wifi by the pool, which for me would have been a winner ;) We actually emailed a bit with someone from Coral before booking, and he was very quick to reply, unlike some of the other properties... Let me know if you want more info. It would give me the extra excuse I need to write the Redang guide here on Travellerspoint!
