Travel Forums General Talk How in the world?

I'm new to this site and I just want to add that this site rocks. All of your stories are definitely inspiring me to get myself out there and see the world but first I am just curious how any of you, regular or not-so regular travellers, are able to afford the trips? Do you have a steady job? Do you save all you can from various jobs? Do you rack up a huge credit card debt? I'd like to travel as much as I can, but I often find myself getting obsessed with costs that I just forget about it. I would appreciate any thoughts on this.....

Thanks

I don't know about anybody else, but I am currently putting about a quarter of my weekly paycheck away for travel purposes. It takes a bit of time (I've been saving for about 3 months now and I have still a few hundred to go for my Costa Rica trip), but it's definitely worth it when you know what your goal is. Also, I have to add, I put aside another half of my paycheck for general savings, so if I'm missing some amount for my trip, I can borrow from that savings. It helps to live with your parents though I must admit! But if you put aside only that quarter of your paycheck, you'll be surprised how much can be saved in a short amount of time. I'm not a big fan of my credit card so I prefer this method of saving.

I do just like Travelover does, put away every extra cent in a savings account to save up for my trips away.

I also have a job in which I spent a large amount of time travelling, so that helps qwell my thirst for travel somewhat.

I wasn't a big fan of the credit card until I got an Air Miles one at 1 for ever $20 spent. I'm up to something like 500 Miles (please, no body do the math...) - closer and closer to the 4,000 needed for Europe! I try to stick everything on the credit card, now... so I get the initial shock (I owe what??), then the relief of the little Air Miles box adding up...

But that's a great idea - saving up on the side. I opened a savings account for travel, and put in small amounts when I can. You hardly notice it, really - and it's nice to be doing somehting concrete that puts you closer and closer to that trip...
