Hi, thanks for reading.

Me and my fiancee are going to sydeny in september on a year working holiday visa, and in need of some help. My orignal plan was to by a campervan in sydney and drive to cairns up the east coast. thing is we really want to be in sydney for new years so was planning on travelling up then back down in 3 months, im glad to tell you this has now changed.

The new plan is to land in sydney and stay at a hostel for 2 weeks (we've already booked one at bondi beach) :) then get plane tickets from sydney to carins, buy a van in cairns and drive back down along the east coast stopping at all the good places and ending up in sydney for new years. Now my question is are campers cheaper in carins? i have heard this several times on the net.. and is it easy to buy a campervan there as they dont seem to have a gumtree section such as sydney, melborne etc.

Also how much do flights from sydney to cairns usally cost.. and is it worth buying the tickets 1-2 months in advanced or can i get cheap tickets 1 week or even on the day?. and does anyone know any good sites to get inernal australian flights?

Thanks

Michael

I don't understand how could you buy a campervan anywhere else but the Cairns area if you are flying up to Cairns but driving down, how would you transport the camper up there in the first place?

As for tickets, book as much in advance as possible, the 2 domestic Australian airlines i know of, Virginblue and Jetstar do a happy hour discount ticket sale thing on their websites from something like 12-1pm Aus time, not UK time. It's a popular route C to S so unlikely you will pick up a happy hour bargin but worth a look.

You may be just as well hiring a rent car/van for about a week, instead of buying a campervan.

relax man! You only gave it two hours before you replied with the above. Some threads go a day or two w/o a response. Take into account that a lot of people read the topics but don't know the answer to your question.

Do you respond in every thread you read? And the usual proper bump post is 24 hours, again you gave it 3.

TP is an excellent site with a lot of useful information, cool members, and fun topics. And another reason you question wasn't answered right off the bat, is because your question has more than likely been asked a few times already. A simple search can usually find what you're looking for.

GL and enjoy Oz.

Hi Mike,
Heaps of cars and vans for sale in Cairns, I work up there lots and the notice boards are full of people selling vans. I replied to your post re construction work. Mate, here's a tip. Buy yoursel a good cheap lawnmower & line trimmer, should be able to pick one up at garage sale or ebay for under $100AUD.
Remember, the grass on the east coast in spring & summer grows super fast - like I have to mow a least once a week in spring/summer(Illive near Byron Bay)
Just go doorknocking wherever you want, find the house with the longest grass, or pop up some notices at the local shops or bowling clubs and you won't have any problems finding people who want their lawns mowed!!!! remember, along the east coast, many older aussies have retired to these little coastal towns, they love a tidy garden and are happy to pay for someone to mow!!
the advantages are
1. Your youre own boss
2. you get paid in cash(No tax etc..)
3. Pretty good money - you can pull about $25-30 per hour
4. Old people often feed you!! Ha Ha Ha!!!
5. you and your girlfriend can do it together, and between the 2 of you can easily do 4 or 5 houses in about 8 hours.
I've done this myself and have been surprised at how easy it is, do 2 days a week and easily make $400-500 CASH, way better than shovelling concrete or Fruit picking!!!
Good Luck
Cheers
Muzz
