My husband & I really enjoyed Fussen, Germany, about a 50 mile drive southwest of Munich. This is the home of Neuschwanstein Castle, possibly the most photographed castle in the world & Disney's inspiration. There were numerous quaint hotels at the base of the castle; also in Fussen. Fussen is a very picturesque Bavarian town and I love the 'Alpine' feel of the region.
We took a train to Salzburg. Spectacular small city! When we're there again, I'd stay in the Old Town close to the restaurants & shops.
We've done the Romantic Road...the towns are great; the terrain is flat and not exceptionally pretty.
On another trip (during Feb.), we drove along the Italian Riviera and really enjoyed the scenery. In Rappolo we stayed in the tourist area on the coast. Many hotels & restaurants to walk to. We also stayed in the medieval, walled town of Luca. Our daughter's study abroad group had taken an excursion there to the medieval ruins.
Florence is Fabulous!
We've been to Venice during summer months when it was quite crowded. We stayed in a hotel right off St Mark's square & enjoyed the convenience of never needing to worry about transportation. We walked everywhere ... or took a gondola!
