Im planning an around the world trip for 1 year starting in November. I'd like to pack everything in a backpack (lightweight) Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on blackberry, iPod touch, or laptop, etc. Is one better than the other for travelling. I'd prefer to not pay for phone services and would just like to have internet access, even if I was limited to wireless connections/internet cafe... I currently have a macBook, but am thinking it may be too big to heavy. Any thoughts?

Personally I'd leave them all behind and just use internet cafes/hostel computers for your internet access. Doing that may at times be a bit expensive but the cost far outweighs the pain in the neck that is hiding your laptop or iphone from any potential thief.

You don't say whether you're tall, short, skinny, fat, male or female but I (male, 6ft) took my laptop everywhere & had no issues whatsoever. If you think that a laptop weighs maybe 5-6 kilos, that's not much when you're humping 20+ on your back.... just swing it round to the front and counterbalance the backpack slightly :)

I must admit that a laptop was a necessity for me as I'm a webmaster so needed my own programs / laptop to do my job.

If you're just skyping people / checking emails then just use internet cafes.

Problem with a phone is that you'd need to buy a sim card in each country & then buy a mobile internet package on top of that to get net access ... to expensive & too much hassle to be worth it.

Also you don't say where you're going but in Oz for example WiFi is often more expensive than an internet cafe....

How about one of the little netbooks? The Acer One is pretty nifty and weighs less than a kilo. It has a wireless facility and ideal for downloading photos etc as well. If you pay a little extra you can have bluetooth installed.

Just a thought!

I will be taking an ipod touch and a small netbook. I had never really liked ipods as mp3 players and thought they were overpriced compared to others. I bought a 2g ipod touch in preparation for my trip, because I wanted an mp3 player to take. Some of the apps I have added are brilliant. It's a lot more than an mp3 player, you can also use skype or other free/very cheap phone services. This cost £80 and the netbook will be £200-300. If you are careful and take basic precautions you shouldn't lose or have anything stolen and if the worst does happen atleast its not a £300 iphone and £1000 laptop. You have to make up your own choice on a decision like this. Some people hate technology and will say it's the worst idea ever, some will say they can't live without it.
