People have said that its not gonna be an easy part of the trip. The trains/buses uncomfortable, multitudes of scams, problems with theft and interference with luggage etc....is it that bad?

I know a one way flight from Bangkok to either destination costs around UKĀ£80.

Anyone got any advice?

Hey Joe -

It's true the bus is not comfortable from Bangkok - it's long and tiring, but cheap. I have a friend who just came to visit me and it took him 15 hours to get to Phnom Penh. A couple of those hours were spent waiting at the Thai / Cambodian border, so maybe you could do it in 10 - 12.

I don't know so much about the scams - I don't know anyone whose had major problems, but as with any extended trip with lots of people milling about, you have to be vigilant.

I go pretty frequently between Phnom Penh and Bangkok and always fly - it's worth the money in terms of time saved, with the minimum of hassle.

Cheers Gordon,

Is 6000Baht a pretty standard one-way price or are there deals available if you know where to look?

Hey Joe -

you mean for the airfare? 6000 Baht is a round trip fare, but one ways aren't much cheaper - maybe 4000 Baht or so.

There aren't many deals going on - the flights are usually pretty booked. There is a big NGO / expat community in Phnom Penh that regularly flees to Bangkok on a regular basis... The Absolute cheapest you may get a round trip fare is $136, $138 or so...

Try the Bangkok Air site (Asia Discovery Pass)for multi stop deals on a good airline, esp if you want to go to a few places besides Siem Riep...can recommend it from experience.Siem Riep is quite sleepy and low key...Miss P

A few months ago i took a bus from bangkok to the border, another bus from the border to siem reap .. it was uncomfortable but fine .. then i took a boat from siem reap to phnom penh .. which was great and really interesting ..

we headed into vietnam after phnom penh so i don't know what the trip back is like .. i've heard there's a harbor town in the south (sianoukville or something like that) and you can take a boat back over the border which i've heard is incredible ..
