I think 40 is a good size. I travelled around in Mexico for a couple of months with a 60L and I started to regret it after two weeks.

I found this excellent site today that discusses the subject in depth: http://www.travelindependent.info/whattopack.htm - it talks alot of sense and it will set your mind at ease. Before finding this site I was foolishly thinking of taking my 60L again... just "less full" - but I've come to my senses again.

I'm going to go on a RTW for 12 months+ and I will be taking a 40L. You can generally take a 40L with you as carry-on luggage which is going to be such a weight of my mind (as well as my shoulders) - I'm even taking their advice not to take a sleeping bag and instead getting myself a silk bag liner.

Good luck.

Thanks. Yeah im thinking that I would regret taking a 60L! I know it can vary, but when a 60L bag is full, how much does it generally weigh?

Thanks for that website, I have come across it once before but didnt manage to read all of it, i will read it all this time!

I wont be taking a sleeping bag, i suppose it depends where you're going but im not planning on camping anywhere. Im sure you'll be fine without one, where are you planning on going?

When are you going on your RTW trip? I've got 8 months until i go, yay

thanks for the advice xx

Well I can't remember how much mine weighed by the end of my trip... all I know is it was too heavy. What's more important is the volume of a full 60L pack. It would not pass most of the airline size rules for carry-on luggage.

I'm not camping anywhere either, I'll be staying in backpackers and hostels so I'm not worried about blankets and my bag liner will protect me from the nasties. I'm still in the planning stages but I'll be taking a trail from Asia (Japan, China, India, etc) through North Africa (Egypt, Morocco) to Europe (Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, UK, Ireland, etc)

When are you going on your RTW trip?

I'm planning on going around September/October this year. I left my job already so I'm planning full time. The main thing I'm feeling stress over is visas around Asia and Russia. It seems to be a problem when you don't have a route set in stone from the beginning. My initial aspirations of just drifting aimlessly around the world are becoming somewhat restrictive. Luckily most of the EU like Kiwis so no visas required there.

Good luck with your planning.

Between 20 and 30 kgs, depending on what you have in the bag and how tight you stuffed your clothes and everything.

If you are one of those small people who are 150 cm tall and weigh around 50 kgs you should have a backpack that weighs no more than 7 kgs - and yes, that includes the weight of the bag itself!

This post has inspired me. I'm going to take a 40L pack on my trip next year. Carry on luggage all the way!
