Just wondering if anyone can help, a friend and I are off to South East Asia for about 10 weeks and im just wondering what sort of budget you think we could do this off?
We will probably spend about 5 or 6 weeks in Thailand, 2 to 3 in Vietnam, then 2 to 3 in Cambodia and Laos.
We have no idea what to budget for this, do you think £1500 would be enough?
Thanks in advance!
£1500 is easily enough, that's 150 pounds a week, about 20 pounds a day......example:
20 pounds is about 1100 Thai baht (costs in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam are fairly similar)
accommodation shouldn't really be more than 200 to 250 baht per night (you'll save on sharing a room too), except places like Phuket and Koh Phi Phi - you can avoid - there's plenty of nicer places!)
food can be very cheap if you eat local style food - 30 baht per meal...lots of vegetarian options too if you prefer....tourist restaurants will tend to be between 50 and 200 baht)
travel is quite cheap......bus, for example, from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (700 kilometer journey) cost about 350 baht)
Train is quite cheap too, especially if you go 3rd class - good for shorter journeys....
extras.....beer - 40 to 50 baht for a large bottle, massage: 100 baht to 300 baht ...very cheap in Chiang Mai, cinema - 100 baht.
The thing where you might spend lots of money is on tours....good for meeting people......but often, you can do the same thing by yourself and still meet people! i find too many tourists seem to....accept that a guided tour is the only way to do things...hop on a local bus yourself, or hire a motorbike...usually about 150 to 200 baht per day, petrol about 30 baht a litre....really nice quiet roads north of Chiang Mai, towards Pai and Mae Hong Son...oh, and if you haven't already booked your tickets, you can fly airasia.com from london stanstead to kuala lumpur (easy from there to get to thailand) for 200 pounds return if you book far enough ahead....Have a great holiday

Thanks for the reply!
I feel reassured I should have enough money, ive been on holiday to thailand before but we ate the more expensive meals (about 250baht per meal), so we didnt really realise how much cheaper we could do it on if we looked in the right places. Determined to do it cheaper this time though as we will be out there more long-term than our 2 week holiday!
