Hi, I'm Marc from Holland.

I'm planning to go on a trip to Sweden. Next week.
Obviously my friend and me didn't come very far with our plans. What we know is that we would like to go to Malmö and see the south. Then we'd like to ban our way through the country until we are in Stockholm. I heard of the Skärgarden and that it would be worth a trip to go to these islands. Are there actually uninhabited islands that could be reached by a hired boat?

We're travelling by car and want to sleep in a tent. Partly on camping grounds, partly maybe in the middle of nowhere.

So is there anyone who did a trip like this before or has broad knowledge about Sweden? It'd be nice to see as well beautiful landscapes as cities. We certainly want to meet other young people and check out the nightlife, too! Or does anyone know of worth-to-see spots or maybe places that are popular vacation places among Swedes?

Thanks so much in advance!

Sorry for the late reply. Are you still in Sweden? I live in Stockholm and i often go out in "skärgården" to just bathe, enjoy the nature and relax. There are not many uninhabited islands but we have a law in Sweden called "allemansrätten" which states that you have the right to spend the night anywhere in nature, even on private property, as long as it's not fenced in. So you can hire a boat and just choose a rock anywhere, set up a barbeque and enjoy the sunset. As long as you move the day after and treat the nature with respect. Do not litter and be extremely careful with fire.

There are passenger boats leaving from Stockholm city out into the archipelago all day every day. If you go to a bigger island, like Grinda, Finnhamn or Sandhamn, there is usually some kind of place where you can hire canoes or cayaks for a day or more so you can explore the archipelago all by yourself.

There are possibilities of hiring sailboats or bigger motorboats but i think you need some planning and booking to do that.

Another great trip is taking the boat through the archipelago from Stockholm to the small "town" of Vaxholm, where you can visit the Vaxholm-castle, stroll around or have a some ice cream in the harbour. If you get hungry there are many excellent restaurants in the harbour. The boat to Vaxholm takes about 1 hour and will cost you 75 SEK, 50 SEK if you are 19 or below.
