If its a holdiay your going then then its you can spend your time planning what your going to do, and day dreaming what it will be like, music helps, good company helps, if its only a few hours then take a good book, you will still be reading when the plane lands and desperate to know what happens to your hero :)
I tend to try to work out where I am by seeing what is outside of the window, I watch out for stars and comets and even saw the Aurora borealis once on a Plane going from America to England.. quite a sight occasionly you pass around storms and watching the storm clouds buiding that the lighting flashing I find very exiting.

You can sometimes see the big cruise ships if your over the sea, and if your of that bent of mind you can follow your route on a map..
Their is plenty to do if you have an imagination...

I also get one of those 99 cent crossword books from the drug store. Its a great diversion for the plane and also for anytime downtimeon the trip.

I've tried some of the above but I find nothing helps more than...vino! :) A glass or 2 of red wine when really tired (and bored) and PAF - I'm out!
