I've done a bit of hitch-hiking in North and Southern Africa and quite honestly it would have been just as cheap to take a bus. Every lift I got, I was charged for. Even if I asked a guy in Egypt the way to somewhere, they wanted paying. In Malawi, there was no problem getting lifts on the back of a horse and cart, but it always cost me. They see you're from the richer section of life and happily stop. But the hand soon comes out for payment request. Don't fancy your chances too much as to having a cheap trip.
If you're up for it though, along with all the cost - what route do you have in mind?? I've done quite a bit of Africa and can tell you where I would prefer not to hitch-hike.
