I am traveling the Rhine River for some research this fall and entertaining the idea of biking it (or sections), as I have heard this is feasible.
Has anyone done it and does he or she care to comment?

Thanks!

I haven't done the Rhine Cycling Trail, but I know it is possible. The Rhine Cycling Trail is signed along most of the Rhine. Most of the time the trail goes on top of the levee, but at other times it goes along roads with low traffic.

It is a popular cycling trail, you shouldn't have any problems.

Will you be taking your bike with you from the USA or do you plan on buying in the Netherlands? Have you cycle-toured before or is this new to you?

TIP:

You can use the book

"Bikeline Radtourenbuch, Rhein-Radweg Teil 3. Von Mainz nach Rotterdam. Mit Erlebnisweg Rheinschiene."

or alternatively

"Bruckmanns Radführer Rhein-Radweg von Mainz zur Nordseemündung: 15 Tagesetappen mit Karten 1: 75.000"

Both books are in German, but this doesn't matter much. The maps are pretty self-explanatory and those are all you really need. You can order them through amazon.de (maybe even amazon.com) or pick 'em up in any German bookstore.
