Hello Everyone!

Can anyone give me advice / recommend a route when travelling Cambodia/Vietnam/Laos?

I will only have 3 weeks to do all the best bits so what do you think are the best bits?!

I'll be travelling Jan/Feb time.

Any advice is helpful.

Thanks,

Lucy.

Lucy,
I think you have 2 choices. Try to do all 3 countries in 3 weeks or drop 1 country and have a better experience. You will have to fly several legs to save your days if you visit all 3 in 21 days. This can get expensive. Personally, I vote you drop one country. I vote you spend 2 weeks in VN, 1 week in Cambodia, fly home. I think you will have a better holiday. Your decision.

1. Do all 3 countries in 3 weeks.
I don't know what city you will fly into. I will pick HAN. I would use 3 days in city, area sightseeing. 2 day HaLong Bay tour, 3 day 4 night tour SaPa. Fly to Luang Prabang on VN Air. 4-6 days, fly to Siem Reap on VN Air. 3 days Angkor touring, boat or bus to Phnom Penh, 2 days, then bus to HCMC. 3 days. city, tunnels, delta tours. Fly home or fly back to HAN, home.

Fly into SGN], 3 days, city, delta, overnight bus to Nha Trang 2 days beach, bus to DaLat, 2 days, bus back to HCMC. Another day in HCMC, tunnels, city. Bus to Phnom Penh, 2 days city sightseeing, boat or bus to Siem Reap. 3 days touring Angkor, fly VN Air to Luang Prabang, 4-5 days, fly VN Air to SGN, home.

2. 2 countries, 21 days.
Fly into HAN, 3 days in city, 3 days in SaPa, 1 day HaLong Bay, overnight bus to Hue, 2 days, bus to Hoi An, 2 days, overnight bis to Nha Trang, 3 beach days, bus to DaLat, 2 days, bus to HCMC. 3 days. Bus to PP, 2 days, boat or bus Siem Reap, 3 days Angkor. Fly to either HAN or SGN, home. My blog covers from NT to PP. My photos cover VN & Cambodia. Good luck with your planning.

I really think you'd enjoy it more if you just stayed in a single country, and I feel that Vietnam has the most diversity to offer you. Sure you could do it all in 3 weeks, but you'll get home and the only way you'll remember where you've been is your photos. I like Hanoi, Sapa and Hoi An the best, and next trip I'd like to see Dalat. Hue is also interesting if you like history and good food.

everyone has own preference for the mode of travel and what they want out of the trip. All of us do not have luxury to take long vacations frequently, so we plan to see as much as we can, and still being able to enjoy the view. For me travelling means seeing the pop stuff, but still spending loads of time with locals. I try not to take internal flights - but then travelling by road is not all that easy in this region. You have to make a choice

If I were you I will land in Ho Chi Min , travel around for 3 days - take a train up to Hanoi with a day or two break each at Hoi- An and Hue. Spend 2 days at Hanoi , 1/2 nights in halong bay (mst see). Take train up north to Sapa - spend 2-3 days hiking etc. Take a bus from Sapa to Mun Khai (Laos) via Dien Bien Phu (thats a bit of a rugged part of the journey - but really inetresting). take a boat all the way to Luang Prabang (take 2 days. 2 nights are spet in two small villages on the way). Spend 2/3 days in Luang Prabang. Take Boat/Bus down to Vientien (stopping on the way if I want). Take a short flight from Vientien to Siem Rep (check schedule if any available), spend 3 days in Siem rep (ankor wat etc - must see), take a short flight to Phnom Phen (or a bus ride if you have more time and less money and you enjoy company of locals). Spend 2 days in PP and fly out ..
Enjoy..

You would have a much better time if you just spent the 3 weeks in vietnam. Loads to do.

Otherwise fly to Hanoi. spend a week travelling down to where ever but cross on Loa boa border/ Ho chi minh trail into Laos. Travel south to si phan don & champasak then border cross into cambodia. Ankor wat & home

The second option doesn't sound like much fun. Not enough time im afraid.

I think you can share you time to visit both Cambodia and Vietnam.
I list here some places with activities you should do:
- City tour in Hanoi
- Trek Fansipan/Sapa
- Kayak Halong Bay
- Cycling/Motorbike along Ho Chi Minh trail
- Cruise on Mekong river
- Discovery/biking at Angkor temples
- Cruise on Mekong River
Enjoy your trip....!!!
