What are peoples recommendations for what card to be using for RTW trip. Basically I am from England but off to SE Asia for 4 months and Oz for 6. Other forums recommend the Nationwide for having no overseas charges but hasnt that been done away with now??? Which debit card works out the cheapest, thanks...

Nationwide still works out the cheapest option, they are charging a maximum of 1%. Although Nationwide on the telephone told me that VISA is now charging 1%, and as Nationwide used to absorb the 0.84% charge they would only be charging the 0.16% difference. Looking at our bank statements we can't figure out what's been charged...we still seem to be getting the proper international exchange rate as featured on xe.com.

The charge is negligible compared to the likes of HSBC and others, so Nationwide is still recommended.

With all respects - you've just let the world know who you bank with.

Who cares? I bank with them too.

Anyway, Nationwide have two types of card. One is the Visa card (with a 1% withdrawal fee) and the other is a basic cash card that has no fees. The only negative about the 'fee free' card is you cannot make purchases on it - only withdraw cash. Also, in Thailand all ATM's have started charging a fee, so it depends if you're planning a long stay there.

I'm not bothered letting people know that I use N/W as well.
They charge for credit card and Mastercard transactions overseas - and in countries outside Europe for Debit card transactions, both for purchases and ATM withdrawals. However, there are still no Debit Card charges for transactions (either purchases or ATM's) within the Eurozone and other European countries that are not EU members.
Hope that clears things up.

Yeah thats great people thanks for your replys... I have currently got barclays debit card but that is about 2.5% on each withdraw/transaction so think I am gonna pop into Natwest sometime and get one of there cards as well and possibly even a credit card...

By N/W - I meant Nationwide, not NatWest.

As in Nationwide Building Society, not Nat West Banks across the nation.
