KarmaKarma has indicated that this thread is about New Zealand

Hello,

I am going to be moving to New Zealand on a WHV in a couple months and I arrive around 5:30am. I was wondering if anyone could help me as far as an estimate of how long it would take me (an American woman 22 years of age) to get through customs, immigration, baggage claim, etc after landing. A friend and her mum will be picking me up, but I understand that airport parking is expensive, so I don't want them to pay a monster fee by waiting for me to be ready (especially since it'll be pretty early in the morning when my flight arrives) and they don't want me to be waiting around for a while either.

Much thanks!

it could take 1 or 2 hours depending on heaps of things .. number of planes being processed in particular . i wouldnt worry about your friends picking you up... if they live in Auckland they will be aware of all that stuff and decide what the best time to arrive,

make it easier and quicker for yourself by making sure you fill in your forms correctly and truthfully, dont bring in any food. fruit etc .

look on the offical customs website for what you can't bring into our island, vunerable country etc ... funny but i just posted a blog with this info on it about 8 hours ago ... see http://kiwitravelwriter.wordpress.com
cheers heather

I think they live about 30 minutes west of the city, so I guess it would probably be best for them to leave around 6am if it's about an hour. If more, they have said they could wait outside the parking zone and wait for me to say I'm ready.

I have looked over that site, but I'll give it another look. Thanks for the reminder not to bring any food.

Cheers for your blog link, I'll comment somewhere so you'll have mine as well :)

It shouldn’t take long to get through customs, especially at that time. However, it is dependent on how may planes are landing and clearing customs at that time. I have only arrived in NZ from Australia and it’s only taken me about an hour from landing, going through customs and going out to where everyone is waiting for me. I usually give my flight details to my family, ahead of time and they check online for when the plane lands. If your friend and mum are use Auckland airport often, then they will know how to drive by the front in time to pick you up, if you are waiting on the footpath outside. Another alternative, is to text each other by mobile phone. Whilst they wait up the road (it’s free) and wait for your txt to come to the front of the airport and pick you up. If all else fails, it only costs $8 NZD ($5.25 USD) an hour to park at Auckland Airport.
Some hints to get through customs more quickly, is to have a pen handy on the plane, and fill out the immigration form when you are still in the plane, so it is ready. PLEASE get rid of any fruit, plant, food products or any other item that is on the immigration form. Be wary about the food, sometimes fruit/food is given on the plane, and passengers could inadvertently put it in their bags. NZ is really stringent about what comes into our country. While you’re on the plane or before you get onto the plane, put all metal items (coins etc) in a clear ‘snap lock’ plastic bag. Items that are on your person because you’ll have to go through a metal detector.
I do hope that you have a great time in our country. :) If you want to find out anything else, please feel free to ask.
I have just read that your friend lives 30 minutes west of the city. I would also suggest that they leave a 5am, if your expected landing time is 5.30am. The airport is about 30 minutes south of Auckland, and at that time the motorways are getting quite busy, especially in South Auckland.

That's the plan, actually. Working out the details of getting me a SIM card so I can text on the phone I'm using for NZ. (In the States, I'm with Verizon, but another friend has given me a GSM unlocked phone.)
