Be aware that those net mesh things are an advertisement for "steal me, there is more here than dirty underwear". I would therefore not bother with the things. (I would also leave the laptop at home, but that is another story.)

50 GBP is a normal price for the security meshes, it will be difficult to get them cheaper. If you are determined anyway get an ebay account.

I agree about the mesh, I have been thinking of getting one, but I have heard they make your pack stick out like a sore thumb, and they're quite difficult to put on if in a hurry/busy area (like on a train). They are also quite heavy. So as an alternative I'm thinking of just getting a piece of wire with eyelets or loops at each end, (something like this http://www.thesitebox.com/Category/4087/eyelet-end-gripple-hanger.aspx or http://www.thesitebox.com/Category/4090/gripple-loop-end-hangers.aspx) Padlocking my zips, and then stringing the wire around my pack and a fixture and padlocking it....Loads cheaper, lighter and less obvious. Maybe something you could consider :)
