Hey luke,

I've travelled through/to Rio a lot over the past few years. Ipanema is the place to stay in my opinion, especially during carnival. Some people will tell you to stay in Lapa, which is a GREAT party district, but gets a little out of control at Carnival. I was there last year (2009) for Carnival and a bunch of people got robbed in their hostels in Lapa. Don't hesitate to go there to party though, just stay in Ipanema of Leblon.

If you are going to Carnival in Rio check this site out for places to stay (it's a decent guide to Brazil, not tons of info but enough to get you started and it's free):

-snip-

Great areas, great beaches, you can't go wrong with Ipanema and Leblon. Book NOW though. It gets really hard to find something really quickly.

Cheers,

John

HI ,

If you can't find any accommodation in Hostel or any affordable hotel try to rent an apartment, there is always someone looking for people to share the apartments. I will be in Salvador carnival , if interested get in touch ....
