Darien Gap...look that up.
So you have to fly a little, or take a sailboat to Panama, which is funner, but obviously longer.
Panama to Mexico overland is no easy thing....Looks short on the map....ain't short on the land. If you want to do it in one shot, you are talking about at least three days on a bus. Harsh toke!
You are not the first or the last to underestimate this leg.
The true hero of the region is TicaBus which is a Costa Rican outfit. Google them and check the prices. There are no trains.
So, you fly to PTY and then get on the Tica Bus....Odin Help You. PTY to David, and then to the border. Walk across the border. Get on another bus bound for San Jose. San Jose CR to San Salvador....Again, Shiva Protect You. San Salvador to Guat. Guat to Flores ...AIGGGH!!! Flores you switch buses at the terminal to another line....Can't remember the name. But there are thirty places all trying to sell you the same ticket....to BZE Belize City!! Belize City, switch the bus at the terminal and bound for Belmopan and the border. Get off the bus and cross the border. Say hello to the corruption of Mexico....Every EVERY piece of paper they give you there, keep until you are out of the country. The border to Cancun, or, better but a lot farther, Merida. Merida to Mexico City. Stay near the airport...You have done enough travelling.
I wish my outlook were brighter...But if you were doing this as a forced march, it would be fricking awful.
