Sewing patches onto your backpack of all the places you've been, is it pretencious?

My view is that some people do it as a simple public display of destinations they have visited...but if someone does it for sound personal reasons e.g. cos the patches invoke great memories of all your experiences when you look at them, then who cares if it might come across as pretentious.

To be honest, I wouldn't do it for that very reason. I'd feel like I'm saying "Look at me everybody, I've been here and here and here"

On the otherhand, you might bump into someone else who's also been to the same places and that could be a conversation starter.

Personally, I'm just going to put a patch of my home country on my pack. Mostly because I'm going to be passing through parts of the Middle East and I don't want to be mistaken for an American... no offence to any Yanks reading, it's just a reality of life, people with political grievences from that region are more likely to target/discriminate against Americans.

I've heard plenty of stories of American backpackers themselves who have put Canadian flags on their packs (particularly during the Bush years)

haha good point Joshuag. I may just slap a big UK patch on me bag to avoid any confusion with all you inferior races.

I was considering it as an alternative to a new bag (mine has suffered a few tears) but actually looking at em they are all about £3.50!!!! and quite small

I am not against the patch thing....I'd never do it to Bugs (Retired) but I have known others who have done it to their bags. I don't have an issue wih this idea....I used to drive a truck and camper when I was working on a a travelling carnival, and my wife and I used to love adding a new town to the back door.

That said, I submit this: If you are self conscious enough to ask the question, or fret over it, you can't really pull off doing the patches. You are already questioning your own motives. Too much introspection can be a bad thing.

My bag, the aforementioned "Bugs" is special to me. I've had it for over twenty years. I considered it a friend, and, if I didn't loathe the idea of puncturing the shit out of the old boy by sewing patches on it him, I would have. Even my Canadian flag, I glued on....And by the by, since he's retired and being mounted in a frame behind glass, I put a fifty dollar bill behind that flag as a last resort twenty one years ago....I bet that thing is disintegrated by now. I would have loved the idea of his history being displayed as we went. Another traveller I know, who works as a designer for backpacks, patched the crap out of his bag. (Also now retired)

So, do it if you want. Don't worry about it.

Also, because I love controversy...Panel Loader. Top loaders suck for what we do.
