Jo1980 has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Hi all

My boyfriend and I are planning our 12 months trip to Oz from end of Oct, we both have 12 months WHV sorted. We cant decide on starting out in Melbourne or Sydney?? We want to do xmas/new year in Sydney then work our way up the east coast.

We will be on a budget so will be looking for part time work here and there so really need advice on whether to do 1 month in Melbourne and 1 month in Sydney or get straight to Sydney and spend 2 months there? We haven't booked our flights yet but want to get them booked soon.

How much money would you all recommend we need to take? We are aiming for £4000 each, we want to be able to have fun, we like a drink or 3!! we will be looking for any sort of job but only want to be working part time. Do you think we will have enough?

What about opening an Aus bank account, is it better to open one online here in the UK or when we get there?

Sorry for all the questions, I will be asking many more in the coming weeks!!

Thanks

Hey Jo,

Havnt really got any experience in Oz myself - just what i have read/heard from others.
In regards to getting there the cheapest option will be to fly from Stanstead to Kuala Lumpur via Airasia then, also with airasia head down to Melbourne and going from there. This works out around £3-400 depending on if you need transfers to Standstead in the first place.

A lot has already been written on here which will go a long way towards answering your other questions, explore TP a lil, really is a great tool for travelling! :)

Oh and also if you are in Sydney for christmas/NY dont forget to check out the thread for TP members meeting there - should be an awesome experience and hey, you may be able to learn a lot from the people meeting there. I know at least 2 people who will have just finished making their way south along the east coast!

Take care
Mike

It's very easy to open a bank account in Australia! Within a few days of your arrival go to your bank of choice with your passport, as within the first 6 weeks of arrival your passport will satisfy identity requirements. You will also need an address in Australia (this could be a mail forwarding or hostel address if necessary). There isn't really any need to open an account before you go, but do think on how you will take you money to Australia.

If you're intending on being in Sydney for Christmas and new year, then you need to book the accommodation now! It's an extremely busy time of the year for this.
