andy_d has indicated that this thread is about Indonesia

spend all 5 in Bangkok, what would you recommend? Obviously the most important thing is that we don't lose a lot of time traveling. But we'd like to do more than just Bangkok - any recommendations?

One night in Bangkok, 3 nights in Jomtien/Pattaya and a final night in Bangkok before you fly out.

Even if you were in Bangkok for the 5 days you can take day tours to other places that are out of the city. In Thailand you can get tours through local travel agencies. Find a tour the night before and leave the following morning or find an afternoon tour or evening dinner cruise in the morning and leave that same day. In Bangkok if you have a hotel near the Skytrain route you can get around the city a little easier.

Jomtien/Pattaya is only around 2 hours by bus or taxi from Bangkok. Jomtien/Pattaya is a beach area. In Jomtien you can find a beach to swim at and reasonably priced hotels. Pattaya is nearby and it is more of a party area but with cheap accommodations and lots of malls and street vendors. Beach at Pattaya is only good for sunbathing, shopping, malls, street vendors bars and restaurants but most tourists do not swim there. Many cheap hotels also have pools. There are travel agencies that have tours leaving from this city too.

Good luck.

I'd spend 3 days in Bangkok and then do a couple of day trips. The ancient capital Ayutthaya is one option and as karazyal says, local travel agencies should have plenty of tour option available.

Koh Samet is another beach option; it's an island not far from Bangkok, a little bit further away than Pattaya. If you wanted less time in Bangkok you could do 3 days there and 2 in Bangkok.

Andy,
I am going to agree with Albert. Since you are a single guy, head for Pattaya! Great nightlife and you do have a nice beach option on Koh Larn. Read my blog: 'Day-tripping Koh Larn' This gives you the best of both, beach time and nightlife. If you prefer culture, then you can day trip several options from BKK. Day trip Ayutthaya, as mentioned, or perhaps Kanchanaburi for 1-2 days. Good luck with your planning.

Another day trip worth doing from Bangkok is Kanchanaburi (Bridge Over the River Kwai, Death Railway, Jeath War Museum, etc). Loads of travel agents on Khao San Road sell day trips to Kanchanaburi so it would be easy enough to organise.

head to the north for trecking, sleeping in small villages, going on elephants, rafting, crossing and leaving in forest... if you are fed up with the sea;)

Other than mentioned above, you can try Sattahip which is 30km south of Pattaya for beach as well. The Floating Market (Damnoen Saduak) is worth visiting as well. Make sure you arrive there earlier than the Tour Buses from Bangkok arrive.

Yuck! I was so disappointed in Pattaya. I think if you want to see something more than Bangkok then why go to Pattaya? You might as well stay and party in Bangkok.

Kanchanaburi was awesome and worth an overnight stay actually. You can take the bus in one direction and the 3rd class train the other direction. The train was a highlight for me. The rafthouses are the River Kwai were so peaceful and super cheap. Erawan Falls was a nice trip out of town. It was a cool place.

Attuthaya is another good day trip from Bangkok.
