I was going to take a train to surrthani but the late train has no more sleep rooms. How is the fan room in december is it too hot? what about just taking a situp seat, is it too long and uncomfortable ride for that.
another alternative is to take a bus. I heard they have an AC bus that should be good, I'm just hesitant to take a bus ride that is that long. Did anyone ever take one of these buses to samui?
The bus is allright - there are actually different types of buses too - you can pay more for a faster one with more amenities, etc. Any of the thousand and one travel agents on Khao San could fill you in.
I actually didn't like the sleeper cars in the train so much - they basically lock up the entire car, and it can feel very confining. You can get a fairly decent sleep, but next time I'll be taking a bus instead.
Bangkok to Surat Thani takes 9-10 hours, and it was a bumpy ride - the carriages didn't seem to have any 'buffers' to stop them banging into one another when the train braked.
The sleepers compartments were excellent though, although sleep was interupted by the braking!
I'd wait for another train, or take the A/C bus.
If you are going to samui, bus would be convenience. Better choose v.i.p bus 24 seats. you would have more room for your feet and could adjust the seat for your comfortable during the journey.
You have to get off the bus at pier and get on a ferry. When you arrive Samui, just get on the bus again and they will drop you off at a market. Now, it would be easy for you to find a song taew ( mini van taxi ) to get to any beach you want. Fare depends on distance and may be can negotiate.
If you go by train, you need to take bus to pier and so on ....
Hope these info would be of help
Fly Bangkok Airways and bugger the expense.
I've flown in and out of Samui from Bangkok and from Singapore and it's well worth the money.
Depending on your itinerary, you could fly Bangkok to Samui, veg, fly Samui to Phuket, veg, fly Phuket back to Bangkok.
It all depends on your budget and comfort levels!
You can take a bus from bangkok, its everyday 6.00 pm from khao sarn road. The cost for the bus + ferry would be around 400 bt, and you can reach Samui at 11.00 am the next day.
Another option is to fly Bangkok airways, the flight is every hour, and the prices are 2000 bt one way.
I have never tried the train, so i cant say about it.
You can also try the speed boat, but again i have no idea about it as i have never tried that too.
