Have you, your husband or one of your children EU citizenship?

As a US citizen you cannot just move to Europe just because you want to, you need a residency permit and a work permit. That means that a potential employer has to sponsor you or your husband. Or that your husband has to open his own company.

A friend of mine is very busy with house maintenance/repair work in Wiltshire (also rural) - most of it through word and mouth. Seems people are doing houses up as opposed to selling. Not sure that helps much, though you'll probably get far more reliable info on an employment site. Good luck.

Dollie, Cumbria is generally not an expensive place to live, unless you want to be located inside the Lake District National Park in which case prices of everything are considerably higher.

Work is scarce in Cumbria at the moment. Friends of mine who are experienced and skilled in construction trades are struggling to find work, as money for development has dried up.
