hey guys,

i had a question about operas. My friend and I are in Prague and Vienna in august. We want to catch a theatre show. An opera unfortunately isnt being staged. But the shows on offer are
1) Don Giovanni - marionette
2) Black light theatre
3) Musical theatre - a night with Mozart

In Vienna, i find only don Giovanni. I would have loved to see La traviatta.

Which would u recommend ? Better to see in Prague or Vienna?

Ok - i just found that august is opera break in Vienna, but there seem to ber performances in the Schonbrunn Palace... any ideas how to book for this or chk prices????

thanks guys!

  • Schönbrunn offer: http://www.schoenbrunn.at/termine/veranstaltungskalender.html?tx_keyac_pi1[showCal]=1&tx_keyac_pi1[showUid]=204&cHash=cecc2bd4f3
  • There won't be much opera in either Prague or Vienna; it's not the season. I don't where the offer is less small, so couldn't help you there

O ! thanks very much... the link to schonbrunn was most helpful.

yea- i realized august is not a good time for operas. but luckily, there are some shows. since this is a first for us, we are not particularly picky.

Has anyone here seen a marionette before?

In Vienna you will normally see dressed up people selling tickets for shows. Which normally include pieces of Opera and Operetta shows (one or maybe a few songs from one play.) I went to one performance in the Hofburg once. It was not too pricey. The stage it in the large Redouten hall. (which burnt down in the 90's, but is renovated.) I think it was something like a performance of one and a half hour. I have heared that the shows in Schönbrunn are also worth it. I think for both also the atmosphere is special.

If there are no shows in the Opera, a tour of the Opera in Vienna is still worth doing. (at least what I remember from it, as I took it ages ago, while being in Vienna with my parents.)
