My bro and I are planning a trip to Europe and are planning on flying into Geneva. We were thinking about renting a car and exploring for 4 or 5 days, then over to paris for 5 days, train up to brussels via train for 4 days, then to Amsterdam for a few nights and fly back to geneva from AMS and then out.

My main question is a car rental in Switzerland and if it makes sense or if a train pass would be better? It seems like a car rental would be cheaper and maybe easier?

Never been to Europe before.

And if we just want to drive around, head up to the mountains etc and take pictures; is it really going to be that expensive? I have heard and read great things about the Interlaken region.

Well I thought it was cheaper. Orbitz had the rental at 30/day but this site says 130+ http://switzerland.isyours.com/e/guide/basics/car.rental.html

How much is it?

Geneva is one of the most expensive places to rent a car. I would search around to different cities to find a cheaper rate. When I was in Nice, France, the rated were cheap but you need a highway pass for Switzerland and I think that costs 40 dollars but you could ask if the rental car has this sticker on it and save the $40 since alot of people drive from Nice up north. But again, I would check all major cities in Switzerland for a good rate first. Anthing over 50 per day is expensive but the drive is priceless!!!!

Thanks for the response. So you are thinking it is only about 40 a day or so? Why would the site above have it as 130+? Would be nice to get a good answer as we are trying to decide where we should fly into (Paris or Geneva) as Geneva is cheaper by 150$ but if Switzerland is going to be too expensive, we may save it for next time and just have more time in France. Thoughts?

EDIT: The reason we were thinking about renting in Geneva is that is where we are flying into.

So you are thinking it is only about 40 a day or so? Why would the site above have it as 130+?

Because it is 130+ USD.

40 USD is the toll sticker for Switzerland that you'd have to buy if you rented the car in Nice and drove to Switzerland.

Switzerland is expensive, both in terms of travelling by car and by rail. But if you have a Eurail pass prices for travelling by train in Switzerland become ok. Public transport is excellent in Switzerland, there are even a number of places where you cannot go by car, places that can only be reached by train.

If I was you I would make some sort of plan what you want to do during those 4-5 days in Switzerland and then look at transport options again.
