Hey i'll be in Rio for the carnival in 2010 and wanted to know if anyone can recommend a decent place to stay (either hostel or hotel)... my main concern for the stay is safety of my travel gear - I basically don't want my bag to be stolen given there will be lots of ppl there and it would probably be an opportune time for thieves to come out.
Try http://www.camaecafe.com.br/ , they have a good selection.
best regards from Brasil
If you can't find any accommodation in Hostel or any affordable hotel try to rent an apartment, there is always someone looking for people to sahre the apartments. I will be in Salvador carnival , if interested get in touch ....
I have been in Rio for Carnival last year and stayed at El Misti hostel, it was cheap, clean, safe and lots of fun. That's where I stayed, but a couple that I know stayed at an apartment. The "safety issue" was very important for them so they got it through an on-line agency before leaving NY. The apartment was nice, they had the privacy and comfort that they needed, but it was a bigger budget.
Hope you get to enjoy the carnival, it's amazing!

My first day of my RTW trip will take me to Rio for the last day of Carnival and i've only found shockingly expensive dorm rooms! So what i'm planning to do is find somewhere to leave my rucksack and party into the night then maybe getting some sleep somewhere during the day! Is this viable or a stupid idea?
Im travelling to Rio on my own at the beginning of Feb until around the 10th. If anyone is around the same time please get in touch! Im meeting up with a friend in Salvador for carnaval then will be travelling alone around Brazil. I head to Chile in March. If you have similar plans let me know! At the moment Im looking for accommódation for Rio.
