Need some advice

Travel Forums North America Need some advice

A friend and I are leaving to travel in the US and Mexico in a few months, and I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on some stuff.

First here is the list of where we are going:

New Orleans (for Mardi Gras)
Clearwater
Cancun
Merida
Mexico City
Puerto Vallarta/Yelapa
Guadalajara
San Antonio

We are currently budgeting $40 a day in the US and $25 a day in Mexico and will be starting to run low on cash in San Antonio so we are planning to set up camp there for a while and save up some more money and then hit up the west coast (San Diego, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle).

Anyway, I'm just looking for any advice you guys might have on some of these places... budget, saftey, transportation, preparation, etc...

It seems as our travel plans get closer and more concrete, and as we start to book tickets and rooms, I am getting more and more nervous that I have overlooked something. Also any information about jobs or or where to find cheap accomodations in San Antonio would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, in advance. :)

sounds like some fun man, only thing i can think of is buy lots of spam for food, walk everytime possible, and stick together, people that are a danger will normally strike on somebody that is alone imo

Nah. You will do fine. Can't plan every detail in traveling. Takes the fun out. New orleans will be fun. 40bucks seems a little small though. Everything is jacked up for madi gras. Mexico should be fine price wise(off peak season). West coast has a some nice hostel and cheap housing. Vegas get a decent hotel. The cheap ones are sesspools! Check craigslist.org for jobs in the area. A lot cheap hotels in san Antonio. Hope u have a lot cash for transportation. Your trip is a BIG circle. U might have a hard time without flying. Especially in mexico.

Have fun.

Agreed with remarcable on New Orleans. Good decision I'd say (I adore New Orleans!) but during Mardi Gras, the hotel prices are up there. So you might have to stretch your budget a bit there. We tried the budget travelling in New Orleans for last year's Mardi Gras and it was doable, but we regretted not splurging on the food. It's such a major part of the culture and definitely worth the extra money.

I don't know if anyone would agree with me on this one but I'd say skip Clearwater and opt for Tampa instead. In my memory, it was nicer but this is really old info (about 15 years ).

Other than that you seem to have a pretty kick ass trip planned. I'm sorry I can't help you on the San Antonio front, but good luck with everything and happy travels!

Yeah I have been scoping out deals on transportation for a while now, Greyhound has some great 7 days advance purchase rates for the US. Also as far as flying, we are flying into Cancun from Ft Lauderdale and out of Guadalajara to Houston. As far as traveling within Mexico, I have been looking at a few bus companies like ADO and ETN.

We are only going to be in Clearwater as a weeknd stopover on our way to catch our flight in Ft Lauderdale. From what I have read the beaches are really nice, and we can camp at one of the state parks in the area (Caladesi Island or Fort Desoto)

Be careful on choosing the buses. I had my share of "issues" on Mexico buses.

Good luck..
