http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/working-holiday/417/

If you are granted this visa you can:

enter Australia within 12 months of grant
stay up to 12 months
leave and re-enter Australia any number of times while the visa is valid
work in Australia for up to 6 months with each employer
study for up to 4 months.

I though you had 12 months to enter from when it is granted..

I'm pretty much completely certain that the date you put on the application is treated as an indication only (mostly just a check that it's not more than twelve months in the future), and you can stop worrying about this. What matters is the date the visa is granted, and then as mike says, you have twelve months from that point on to enter the country.
If you want to be absolutely completely certain, you can contact the department of immigration about this. Other people who've done so and posted here about this have said good things about how helpful the people responding were.

Thank you Sander. I was reluctant to phone the Immagration as it is £1 per minute.

Hi :)

Dont worry it is only an indication for the immi. When i went last year, i put on my visa i was going in September and ended up going in June and there was no problem. I had some problems before i went as i lost my passport and while sorting that out i asked if it was ok that i was going "early" and i was advised its fine, and just an indication..ENJOY!
