Being treated like a walking wallet.
I like to meet people and have conversations for the sake of talking, I don't like being held hostage in a shop or in a taxi, or harrassed at the border to hand over cash for nothing! :(

^it is kinda difficult to travel alone but you can still enjoy it by meeting friends along the way... one of the biggest disappointments for me though is saying good bye to those friends that i meet, although there is still a great chance of seeing them again and that our technology allows us to communicate easily, it wont be the same as how it is when you were still hanging out with them...

That first step back into a cold winter after hitting the west coast...

Feeling like the world is getting smaller. Anyone can travel anywhere these days, satellite phones and email mean you are never far from civilisation, you can watch a documentary of anywhere on the planet. It just feels sometimes that there are no mysteries left to uncover. There are still beautiful places to travel but it just feels like the mystery has gone somewhat.

I would have loved to have been born 200 years ago and been able to happen across the pyramids hidden in the mist of morning silence and felt in awe and wonder of them whereas now you rock up there with 100 other coaches, litter everywhere and people haggling you while people pose in the most bizarre ways as their partner tries to capture them with one of those cheesy holiday snaps kissing the sphinx or seeming to hold up a pyramid :(

I think the most disappointing thing about travelling are time and money. Time because when your just enjoying and loving the place and your on schedule, you can't do anything and money because not every one can afford it and you need to have a budget for it. So make sure everythings planned.

I agree with those saying it's not just American tourists that can be obnoxious and arrogant.

I love the Greek islands, but my fellow Brits have really ruined them. Also, avoid the Canaries or anywhere in Spain, unless you want to encounter the absolute worst of Brits abroad. As well being obnoxious and arrogant, expecting everyone to speak English, and wanting egg and chips or roast beef dinners wherever they go, British tourists also get plastered drunk, start fights, and throw up everywhere. At least Americans don't do that.

Some people mentioned getting stuff stolen...the most disappointing, depressing and downright heartbreaking thing that ever happened to me abroad was when my ex-gf had her bag stolen in Las Vegas.

It had her camera in it containing all our holiday snaps. We were nearing the end of a two-week holiday, and all our pictures from a week in San Francisco and a week in Vegas were on that camera. The money, the passport, the camera can all be replaced, but man, those pictures...it still hurts me now to think of the memories lost that day. When I got home I scoured the internet to try and find pictures of the places we'd been and the things we'd seen, but it wasn't the same. Truly heart-breaking. :(

The most disappointing thing about travelling to me is the terrible selfishness of travellers, especially backpackers (yeah, such as myself. Twisted, eh?).

Most people I meet travel exclusively for themselves. They're only interested in maximising their own fun, no matter at what cost or at whose expense. Paying more for sustainable tourism and travel? Forget it, we're poor, we wanna have a good time, let someone else with more money worry about that.

Worst thing of all, I occasionally behave like that myself as well :(

hay there
i believe that what ever you have posted in the post is reality and i feel the same at such occasions
what ever i have learned from travel is that "we know that we will never meet again but the time we are together we can live each and every moment with full excitment and joyfully and believe that it will never comes back again so be sure that nothing what ever you want to do just do it because you will never get a chance to do so again "

:)

That's a horrible thing to happen; I really feel for you both. A guy on a tour I did recently in Indonesia lost his camera - and all of his photos of the trip up to that point. It has to be one of the most disappointing things that can happen on a trip.

Encountering racist locals was really unpleasant for me. I know it's a problem everywhere and I don't expect sunshine and roses, but it just gets me down everytime, especially when I was just minding my own business and wasn't doing anything to draw attention to myself.
