Vienna during Christmas

Travel Forums Europe Vienna during Christmas

I hope I posting in the right place.

I'm arriving in Vienna on Xmas day this year leaving on new year eve.

My questions are :

Are major attractions open during that week ( not on xmas day of course)?
Is it easy to find restaurants and cafes there , and do they open late?

How cold is it in Dec there? Does it usually rain or snow around that time ? I don't mind the cold provided I'll be leaving from below zero anyways.

Is it a good idea to buy a week pass for the subway there?

one last thing for now, I read on different thread about racism for non-Caucasian which worries me , how true is that and is it enough to ruin my vacation

Thanks,

Temps will be between -5 C and +5 C, mostly hovering around freezing point. You'll most likely get a mix of rain and snow. Low points of - 15 C are possible, but highly unlikely during daytime. If you are from a cold weather country the winter in Vienna will feel mild to you.

If you are staying for a week and use public transport at least twice a day - yes, most definitely.

about racism for non-Caucasian which worries me

Which race are you? Black or Asian? I don't think you'll have any problems unless you hang out in the bad areas of Vienna. That said note that in general racism is a bit more wide-spread in Europe than in North America. (Many female Asians and Blacks work as prostitutes in Europe, be prepared to be treated accordingly.) Tough up and don't let it spoil your fun.

Thanks, T_maia for the reply.
I'm from midlle eastren background, usually when I visit Europe , people there think I'm French or Italian so usually I blend in there , however what threw me off when I read the racism thread, that some posting mentioned being dressed in designer clothes and still getting negative attention. My wardrobe is far from designer clothes , I like comfortable clothes when I travel not sloppy but for sure not too formal either. Is that going to be a problem? I love to travel light enough I'm going to carry my winter coat.

I will planning my activites during the week , will try to avoid the more tough area in Vienna.

Thanks,

If you normally "blend in" in Europe Vienna won't be any different. Don't worry too much about it. Your clothes should be ok too. Vienna isn't anything special in terms of racism, it is just like any other Western European capital. The usual stereotypes and some discrimination, but nothing to really worry about. Stay away from the bad areas and you'll be fine.

BTW, if you are a religious muslim let me know. Vienna has one of the few swimming pools in Europe for muslim women who wear the hijab, since I speak German I could check for you whether it is open during the time you are there. And then there is the issue of halal food...

Vienna is a very disappointing city over Christmas. Instead of getting some sort of local transport pass for the city I would suggest that you spend the money towards or train or bus ticket and head off for the mountans that arent so far away around the Tyrol, Salzburg, Innsbruck etc. You will find some lovely pensions (cheap hotels) and so much more to do on a Christmas theme. Vienna is a lovely city but not geared up for Christmas like they are up in the Austrian hills and mountains.

Strongly agree with BeduinLeo that Salzburg or the Alps would be the better choice for Christmas.
