Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Travelling Oz/New Zeland/ Thailand- please help!

Hi,

I am planning on traveling from Feb 2010 (just after my 21st birthday!) and am planning to go to Thailand/ Australia and New Zeland. I don't really have any plans at the moment so I am looking for help on what is the best order to go in, and how long is really needed in each country to make the most of it!

I want to spend roughly 6-8months traveling and would want to spend most my time in Oz. I am traveling alone and am a bit nervous as I have never done it before! If anyone is traveling at the same time it would be really good to hear from you to help me on my way. :)

Welcome to TP!

Difficult to say which order is best - Thailand is cheaper than Aus/NZ so this could either be a cheaper way to start your travels, or a cheaper way to end your travels! You don't mention how long you intend to stay in Australia, however the working holiday visa may be of interest.

Regarding travelling alone, it's not necessarily a problem - certainly in Australia you will meet people at youth hostels, and I expect NZ (and Thailand?) too. For the amount of time to spend in each country, it depends on what you want to do (where you want to go). It may be an idea to have a look at the guides on this website and elsewhere to get an idea on what you may want to do - Australia, New Zealand, Thailand.

I notice you're from Reading - I've rarely bumped into anyone else from my home town either when travelling or on these forums!

I am planning on about 6months total so really 3 months in Oz. Ok thank you for the tips I will look into these. Oh really are you from Reading too then? Hvae you been to any of these 3 places- where did you go?

Ok, so sounds like just the tourist eVisitor for Australia then (obtained free of charge via the Australian immigration website). That allows entry for up to 3 months at a time for tourists.

I visited Australia on a working holiday quite a few years back, and 2 years ago I returned and am currently living in Melbourne. At some point I will be returning to live in the UK. I haven't been to either NZ or Thailand though - would like to visit NZ!

Yep - born at the Royal Berks, and grew up in the Reading area too!

heyyy my travel partner and I are doing the same route as you starting novermber this year.. were doing thailand first for a month...going to do some diving there etc, we're going to spend most of our time in Oz and a month in NZ and a stop off in India on the way home. we'll be away for about 12months. the general advice from other travellers and travel agents etc is to do thailand first, as it is abit cheaper it wont eat toooo much into your funds.. thats the idea anyway!!! :-)
