I urgently need your suggestions please.

My son was born in Papua New Guinea while I was working there, it was before PNG became independant and under Australian Governing, therefore my son was born an Australian. I am Uk and returned to UK with him on my passport. When he was old enough he applied for and got his own Australian passport, which he duly used to travel overseas on holidays.

Unfortunately he misplaced his passport when he returned to UK as he moved around alot, knowing he wasnt travelling in the forseeable future he didnt bother to renew, he did however report it lost.

A few years later he has applied for a replacement passport and been told the rules have changed and now he cannot have an Australian passport.

Yet he has already had one and travelled on it!

The rules have also changed here for work and now everyone has to produce their passports, so the job he has just secured after many applications and interviews he cannot commence as he has no passport.

Its a nightmare,

Pauline

For Australian citizenship - Proof of Citizenship may help.

You don't say where "here" is, so difficult to say anything without knowing what country you're referring to as "here".

Hi Thank you for your reply, 'here' is the UK.

My son was due to commence job today after many weeks of interviews, only to be asked to bring his passport for ID. He is a prisoner of sorts until such time as we can sort this problem, he cannot travel nor work here.

I would very much appreciate any info, guidance anyone can give me please.

He has travelled on his previous Australian Passport, surely there is a case for him to be re-allocated another?

and if the job situation in the UK now demands a current passport be shown and copieed at start of employment, he is in a critical position with no funds coming in, surely this isnt right?

He doesn't have a UK passport?

No he doesnt have UK passport, as he applied for and received an Australian passport that he used 3 times for travel on 3 separate occasions.

He has now been told there are two options open to him, to apply for a Papuan New Guinean Passport as he was born there or he can apply for UK citizenship at a cost of many thousands and a long wait then apply for a passport. There is no money avaaialble for this to happen and its not the ideal choice, either of the options available.

and while all this is happening, he cannot work to earn money and pay for basic living needs.

My thoughts are to contact Liberty? as his civil rights and liberty has been curtailed through no fault of his own, he is a victim of circumstance. May I have your thoughts? is this too much? wrong call?

Seems ironic, if he had reapplied earlier, when he mislaid the Australian passport, we wouldnt be discussing now.

Are you British by birth (or his father)? (i.e. born to British parent(s) and born in the UK). If so, he is probably already a British citizen by descent, or he may be able to register. Check details here for that.

The cost wouldn't be many thousands for this - does depend on which route he is able to take for that.

In regards to the Australian passport, was it the Australian High Commission in London that told him he was unable to have an Australian passport?

For the Australian side of things, this form on the Citizenship website is for applying for proof of Australian citizenship - page 6 shows what is required for people born in the former Australian Territory of Papua before 16 September 1975.

Thanks for so much valuable info. I have printed off forms and will make my way through.

Just been told my son was issued with temporary passport, will this make any difference?

The use of and travel using it can be proven.
