If you book a homestay on Olkhon Island, in Lake Baikal, they will arrange a shuttle bus for you, from Irkutsk. I highly recommend going to the island: it was an amazing experience.

I took the train, it was one of the legs on my trans siberian trip.
Irkutsk has trains and, in the summer ferries across Lake Baikal to Severobaikalsk. also try the The Baikal-Amur Mainline.

I hope you eat lots of smoked fish and get to see the deals which unfortunately didnt make an appearnace for me.
