Been there twice and liked it a lot, but also found it very touristy at the same time. In a week you will hardly see much of the country. Jaco on the Pacific side is a nice little surfer town with some good waves. There's also Volcano Arenal in the North of San Jose which is an impressing place and I loved Tortugero National Park on the border to Nicaragua.
Finally, Manuel Antonio is a great little town on the Pacific to hang out and relax for a couple of days. That alone could fill up a week ;). So, I'd say go and visit, but don't waste your time in San Jose and stay two weeks in the country if you can.

nice, a fellow graphic designer!

thanks for the tips. I will definitely look into those places as I defintely don't want to be in the city. I wish I could go for two weeks. I was actually going to go to Munich, Frankfurt, and Stuttgart and see Germany for two weeks to meet some friends but I've decided to hold onto my money for another big trip or move in a year. So I'm just gonna do a week down there. It'll be nice, cheap, and it'll help me get back into learning spanish.

Graphic Designers...well looks like I can really join the crew down in Costa Rica.

I'm heading that way over Christmas and New Years looking for new things to see, food to eat, and people to meet. Lots of great ideas, but I wonder...where should you plan on being for New Years?

I will have a 4x4 as I'm spending 20days there, and plan to see as much as I can coast to coast...

Suggestions are always welcome...maybe a little niche that doesn't have to be really widely known about...I like the secret spots (they are often the best)

Happy Traveling!!

The most peace loving country on the planet. No military, full of endless wildlife, the most magical boat trip you will ever do, quite honestly a week isnt enough. But if thats all you have got then definately do it. I loved it so much.
