I am leaving the country to travel Thailand, and South East Asia and Australia for a year. Can anyone suggest good travel insurance for under £200. I have had quotes from STA Travel for nearly £400. Is this too much?

Help please

Thanks

£400 is a lot! I paid around £130 with this company a few years ago for 12 months cover. I never had to make claim so I can't vouch for how good they are though but that gives you an idea of price: http://www.insureandgo.com/travel-insurance/backpackers-insurance.htm.

Otherwise google 'backpacker insurance' and you should find it comes up with loads of options under £200.

From my personal experience as being tight with my money, you generally get what you pay for when it comes to travel insurance when you read the fine print. Usually the very cheap ones do not cover you for half the quantity of stuff the cheap ones do and also the cheap ones are harder to claim on. This is especially the case with these people who now think that by purchasing the trip on certain creditcards that they will cover you to a satisfcatory level. The people at the banks are trained to tell you rubbish and get you to get your self in to major debt by believing the stuff they tell you (failing to mention the fine print which shows what they don't honour which often happens to be the sorts of things they say it does cover). It's not until something very costly happens like medical related stuff in the USA or an overseas death that they regret ignoring the advise the travel agent gave them and taking out a more comprehensive policy.

If you plan to go to North America do not skimp on your travel insurance make sure it has unlimited medical. Most the cheapest policies at least in Australia do not have unlimited medical.

we used Amex, they were OK, we did not make any claims. £400 seems a lot.
