Hello

We are planning the Indonesia leg of of adventure at the moment and wonder if anyone can advise on travel between Nusa Tenggara and Sulawesi?

We are in Indonesia travelling though Java, Bali and then onto Nusa Tenggara which is quite straightforward. After there we want to go North to Sulawesi and having looked into it the only option seems by boat (by air we'd have to backtrack to Bali).

Has anyone done this route and can advise on what boat companies are good.
Even better would be if someone has done it recently and has an idea on how often the boats go? We realise that some only go once a week or even once every 2 weeks and don't want to miss our boat by one day as we only have 2 months here in Indonesia.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Sophie

I can recommend the Pelni boats which you can take from Lombok, Flores and Alor to Makassar I believe. I used them in Maluku. They are notoriously extremely late but otherwise pretty efficient, comfortable and cheap. I would go 1st class as you then get a lockable cabin with lockers plus meals.

That is a great help thankyou so much.

Did you book your boat in Maluku or though an agent ahead of sailing? I just tried to look at their website but it's a bit out of date (by 3 years!) and their email isn't working to ask either.

Thanks again

Hi Sofe,
Head over to Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forum and check all posts by Laszlo.
He travels a lot to Maluku and knows a lot about the Pelni ferries.
here are some posts on Pelni Ferries from LP Thorn Tree forum you may find useful to read.

hi sophie,
things in indonesia, specially the governement services (as Pelni boat) are not "connected properly" in internet, so you can just come to the ferry harbour and get the ticket easily....uuhhh,not really that easy, don't expect that people would go in line while queuing the ticket. but believe me east of indonesia should be a great adventure for you.;)

Sorry for late reply...
I booked at the Pelni office a day or two prior to departure. That was on Kei Kecil and had no problem at all, the guy even spoke English!

You have fat chance of booking anything online. Just ask around when you are out there, there are bound to be many people who know the local Pelni schedules.

Godd luck and have a great time!
