Hi, me and my girlfriend are off to aus in 43 days and are going to by a campervan and travel down the east coast, i was just wondering what most people do when they need a poo and travelling by campervan. Obviously we will be stopping at some sites but some times will be on the road for days...

The highways have rest stops, which mainly consist of a gravel area you can park off the road, but sometimes other facilities like a picnic bench and a thunderbox.

Hi Mike, this was a major concern to my wife as well and we ended up having a break at McDonalds restaurants, to grab a hot chocolate/coffee, use the bathrooms and use the free WIFI if it's available. The bathrooms are usually clean and well maintained at McDonalds, and are heaps better than rest area pit toilets.

Having said this, if there isn't any form of restaurant in sight, you'll have to use the rest area dunnies - it's worth carrying your own paper as sometimes it's missing.

Although distances are quite vast in Australia, they are not that vast;)
You'll be fine, there is always the big black!

Hi Mike, if you call in at any RAC or driving centre you can get a map that has all the rest stops marked with the facilities like toilets, showers, and BBQs, as you travel the east coast you will find a rest stop approximately 3-4 ks outside every town or small enclave, the toilets are always clean and i never found a shortage of paper, there are plenty of garages with toilets and showers for a small fee.
If you want a great cheap meal, look out for the RSLs, Retired Servicemens League clubs.

Although it would only be useful when you are in towns , i have downloaded a programme on my iphone called Toilet Mate which supposedly lists all public toilets in australia with their distances in metres from your location
