Can anyone tell me where the fake guide books in Asia start appearing?

As in what country do they start getting easy to find?

Peninsula Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam being examples

Hi!

I spent time in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia..cant help on the others but as soon as your in Bangkok, head to Khao San road, theres trillions of stalls selling "lonely planets" for next to nothing. Same in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh just head to the backpacking areas and same in Cambodia, you shouldnt have a prob :)

I think I bought mine in Cambodia (Siem Reap) and also saw some in Vietnam; I don't remember seeing any in Thailand but you may be able to pick up second hand ones at some of the street stalls around Soi Rambuttri.

In HCMC, plenty of copy Lonely Planet's offered for sale on Pham Ngu Lao, the KSR area of HCM. I saw some there and also on De Tham St. Many guesthouses also have older copies for sale.

Take one with you for your first scountry and swap it at the hostel swaps as you go. We did this for 4 months all RTW, worked a treat. Even if book is a little old, info mostly the same, prices are always out of date.

I bought a copy if of the Lonely Planet's "south America on a shoe string". I remember paying 120,000vnd at Bai Ahoi corner in Hanoi. But the one I bought was an original but used copy from one of the sellers that scout about on their bicycles. Straight after the sellers friend returned and asked to buy it off me for 140,000vnd. We was all suprised how cheap I got it for, I was so happy. Not been to south america yet tho...

Thanks again for the replies.

So in Vietnam it looks like they are selling for around 7-8 USD$.

Anyone know about the price in Thailand for the fakes?

Should polish of this thread nicely if there's an indication of Thai prices!
