I would like to visit Australia for a short holiday, to see what the country is like and whether I'd like to work/live there in the future.
3 weeks is probably the maximum I could take off from work in one go
I am thinking of starting in Melbourne, renting a car, and touring up to Sydney to fly home. I've checked the mileage on several maps and this seems quite doable in that time frame. Can anyone comment on this?
I have invested in several travel guides, as informative as they are, they don't really state what month is best to go, or cheaper. All they say is "go north in the winter, south in the summer"
Melbourne > Sydney seems such a small portion of the map, I won't have time to see Uluru / great barrier reef / the northern tropical areas.
Also, I'm searching for multi-destination flights, london>melbourne, syndey>london, but they are coming up at £800+, should I be able to find cheaper?
Sorry for so many questions! I've done this type of travel before in the US, but Australia is completely new to me!
It'll take 1 long day to go from Melbourne to Sydney by car. It depends on what sort of travel you want to do. Are you interested in visiting the smaller towns in between Melbourne and Sydney as well? Are you interested in camping? If you enjoy camping then hiring a car is the way to go. If you're only interested in visiting the bigger cities on this trip then it is faster and probably cheaper to fly between places. If you do this then you can probably fit in the great barrier reef too (if you have 3 weeks).
Sample Itinerary: Spend 4 days in Melbourne. Then hire a car and spend 4 days along the Great Ocean Road. Fly up to Sydney and then spend 3 days there and then fly up to Brisbane, Townsville or Cairns, hire a car and spend your remaining time exploring that area (maybe include a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, the Whitsundays, the Undara Lava Tubes or the Gold Coast).
Thanks for the reply.
To be honest, I would much prefer to hit the country and see the small towns. I'm happy to spend 2 days exploring Melbourne, and a day or two for Sydney, but I'd really like to get out on the road and "see" the country.
On previous road trips in the USA it tends to be a case of stay 1 or 2 nights maximum in each place
I'm not sure on the camping front, it'd be a great experience but I was planning on staying at motels/B&Bs
I don't want to sound ignorant by not searching myself, but I don't know very much about what is down there to see, so I'm kind of baffled as to where to start.. :S
I would like to make it further up the coast in 3 weeks, maybe Brisbane, but that might be pushing it. I'm hoping someone else has done a similar road trip and can give me some advice
Thanks for your help
