I have been going around and around about whether or not I need the very expensive series of shots to inoculate myself against Japanese encephalitis. I will be traveling through India, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Nepal during the months of OCT- MAY 2009-2010. Although I will be backpacking and traveling through rural areas, I am feeling that the risk is not great enough for me to get the vaccination.
I travelled in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and didn't bother with the JE jab. There's a pretty low risk in the areas that travellers would generally visit. I'm not sure about India and Nepal though.
how long will u be in rural areas??
Im going to thailand and india and im "forgetting it" however im not going into many rural areas and if I do it wont be for vey long... My partner has the J.E vacc but she has spent extensive time in Nepal... her doc recommended she get her booster for her trip away with me, even though we arnt going to Nepal but they said it was unnecessary for me!?
Not sureif that will make any sense to you...

Maybe her doc was just thinking about keeping her immunisations up to date as if she's had it once she may as well have the booster kind of thinking?
We have been travelling for 3 years now and didn't get the Jap E vaccination, unless you are going to be spending huge amounts of time in rural areas (like really rural for months at a time) we were told it was un-necessary.
