Hey all I'm looking for some help on places to visit on a tour that I'm planning with a mate. I'm planning on flying in to LA and catching up with him mid January. As this will be our first visit to that part of the world, we are a bit unsure of where to head. At this stage it looks like it is going to be a six week trip. Our basic plans are to road trip it up the west coast to Canada, and then spend a couple of weeks snowboarding.

So far we will be heading to Vegas and the Grand Canyon for a time but thats it. Any ideas on sites to see and places to stay would be a big help.

Be aware that the 2010 winter Olympics will be happening in early February in the Vancouver to Whistler vicinity which equates to mega traffic and accommodation prices verging on extortion.

It would help if you told us your means of transportation - it makes a really big difference because many places are just not accessible by public trans. You do realize this is the rainy season in this part of the world!

We were planning to hire a car and drive. I knew it was winter then, but how bad rain are we talking. Showers every now and then, or tropical wet season.

I did not know about the winter olympics. That may change our plans a bit.

In California our rainy season is still less than Sydney gets in rain every month of the year except July.

It will tend to rain for an hour or two, then clear slightly and not rain at all for the next 4 hours or so, then rain again at night for awhile. It may rain for 2-3 days out of 7 on average.

Overall, it will also rain more in the north (near San Francisco) than in the south (near Los Angeles).

Up near Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington it's a different story. It will never rain hard, but it will drizzle constantly for days at a time, and be overcast for maybe 5-6 days out of 7.
