I am planning on coming to Germany from Vancouver, BC, Canada next August... Specifically, I am going to Wacken, Germany, for a Metal Festival.
My question for everyone here is... What would be the best city in Germany to fly into from Canada, and how would I get to Wacken from that city?
Thank you for your help!
I am not the big expert for intercontinental flights, but when I check from flights Vancouver to Hamburg (what would be the closest big airport.) I get a flight by Northwest and or KLM (but they are codesharing), with a stopover in Amsterdam.
From Hamburg as decribed on the website: Wacken Open Air
And than only hope that Mambo Kurt will be playing next year
Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Frankfurt am Main are the closest intercontinental airports and I would recommend flying into one of those three. From there it will then cost you between 50 and 150 EUR one way to get to Wacken, depending not so much on distance but more on mode of transport and time you have to make the journey.
Another solution would be to combine a visit to Wacken Open Air with a stopover in London. Intercontinental flight to London, stay in London for a few days and a cheap flight to Northern Germany. The flights will most likely cheaper that way, but overall with transport to and from the airport in London and staying in London for the night it will even out or become more expensive. The reason I recommend it anyway is the added value for money: you get to see London, the European capital of what is hip in punk, gothic and metal fashion.
I also recommend that if you can manage it time and money-wise that you do a little tour of Northern Germany before or after the festival. It is a long flight from Vancouver, use it to the max. Before would be better, afterwards your tent won't be in a state that is of any use to you.
BTW, make sure you watch when tickets are being sold and grab them ASAP. Wacken tickets sell out within very short time.
