The best way to minimize on ATM charges would be to open an account in Australia and then transfer a large chunk of money directly into that account. You will still be charged on the transfer and possibly on your ATM withdrawals by the Australian bank, but typically this still ends up cheaper.

Get a Royal mail card, they have no fee for overseas purchases.

There are always travellers cheques.

As always the onus is on you to check all fees involved and calculate best combination for you.

The search engine on here is your friend !

Open a nationwide FlexAccount, when the internet option asks, tell them you only want it as a secondary account (don't transfer your original account) ... that way you get a cash card with no fees for international withdrawals & get to keep your original account.

Of course, if you're not bothered about keeping your existing bank account then just switch to NW

for anyone who is in Canada, get a TD premium acct (keep a minimum balance of $5000), you will get a safe deposit box (place to keep your diamond ring etc.), 1% cash rebate gold visa (including some travel insurance) as well as international ATM transaction fee free (on PLUS network)
