Would you recommend travelling through the North of Chile or the North of Argentina heading to Peru from Santiago?

Well, depending on time: both!
You can travel to San Pedro de Atacama from Santiago. Visit that area and take a bus to Salta from there and visit the northern parts of Argentina, then onwards to Bolivia and Peru.

How much time do you have?

That could be a good idea. I don't have actually have a time limit as I haven't bought a flight home yet. It just depends if I want to dig into the credit card at a later stage! or try to do things cheaply

Yeah Utrecht is right! Salta and surrounding area, the Atacama dessert are both worth visiting! And please don't forget to visit the salt flats 'Salar de Uyuni' on your way in Bolivia. If I were you, I'd go from Salta (Argentina) - Atacama (Chile) - Uyuni (Bolivia) - Potosí - Sucre - La Paz - Copacabana (Lago Titicaca) into Peru! Goodluck with planning!
